PRACTICE

Dr. Johannes (Hannes) Adriaan Coetser is a general specialist physician based at the Life Knysna Private Hospital, located in the picturesque Garden Route town of Knysna, Western Cape.

Dr. Coetser started his medical studies at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, completing his MB ChB degree in 2004. He spent his internship and community service years in the eastern Free State towns of Bethlehem and Reitz, where a love for internal medicine was cultivated. He enrolled for the MMed internal medicine course, training under renowned physician and endocrinologist Prof. Willie Mollentze, and later Prof. Vernon Louw. He completed his post-graduate studies in 2011.

Dr. Coetser’s medical practice opened its doors in 2015, and is located in the Life Knysna Private Hospital. The practice is well equipped with diagnostic equipment, allowing the taking of resting and exercise electrocardiograms (ECG), measurement of lung functions and performance of ultrasound examinations of the heart. The Life Knysna Private Hospital has a fully functional radiology department with X-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI scan capability. Two on-site laboratories provide pathology services for blood and tissue tests.

Dr. Coetser sees patients by appointment in the rooms, as well as in-hospital admissions. The location of his practice allows quick access to the casualty department, wards and ICU, in case of emergencies.

Dr. Coetser’s training in general internal medicine allows him to diagnose and treat a wide spectrum of medical conditions. These conditions include diseases of the heart, lungs, nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys, joints, blood, immune system and hormones (e.g. diabetes and thyroid problems).

Dr. Coetser enjoys diagnostic medicine, placing emphasis on the role of the patient’s story, journey and experience in deriving a correct diagnosis. His practice relies on evidence-based examination techniques, special investigations and pharmacotherapy (medicines) to provide a high quality service, always placing the patient at the centre.

Dr. Coetser further has a keen interest in medical education, having completed a fellowship with the South African FAIMER Regional Institute. He still enjoys playing an active role in student education, taking in undergraduate medical students for their required elective period.

Building on this love for furthering medical education, Dr. Coetser enjoys giving talks and lectures on various medical topics to the medical community of the Garden Route.

Knysna offers unique lifestyle opportunities, which Dr. Coetser thoroughly enjoys along with his three boys, Ben, Nathan and Sam.
